Decisions based on compromise

Sometimes compromise is a good thing.  And sometimes…  you end up with decisions that just don’t make sense.

What do you think?  Open/closed office space concept or closed/open space concept?

Do you have any examples of compromise decisions gone wrong?

  • Deborah,

I know it’s said that a good negotiation is when everyone loses a little and I believe this is true when it comes to monetary negotiations. But when it comes to decision-making, I think compromises are doomed to fail. In addressing a problem that is not related to union negotiations, solving the problem is what matters. Compromise solutions strike me as being about people and power, not about the core problem. The energy expended on monitoring whether the parties to the compromise are being appropriately represented may become the focus, rather than the problem itself. I’m not advocating dictatorship but I’d far rather see a mutual understanding of what has to be done and a mutual commitment to doing it.
