ALC 2024 Recap and the Importance of Investing in Talent

Last week, Chattanooga witnessed a groundbreaking event as we, in partnership with the United Way, hosted the inaugural Ascension Leadership Conference, a day-long event designed to unlock the leadership potential within emerging leaders and mid-career professionals in, and around, our region. The event proved to be a resounding success, thanks to the enthusiastic participation of the attendees, speakers, volunteers, and sponsors.

Breaking Down Barriers to Growth

The driving force behind the conference was a recognition of the hunger for growth among professionals, juxtaposed with the feeling of being stuck in their careers. Born from the inaugural Community Culture Index, Ascension was created to support emerging leaders as they develop into the future leaders of our community. The goal for Ascension was clear: to illuminate the pathways to advancement and demonstrate that the sky's the limit for those willing to seize opportunities.

Tapping into Local Talent

In his opening remarks to kick off the day, Wade Hinton, CEO of Hinton & Company, emphasized, "We see you, and we're here to help you grow into the leaders we know you can be.” After reviewing the results of the Community Culture Index, it became clear—why keep looking out there when we've got so much untapped talent right here? The conference became a platform to acknowledge and nurture this local talent, sending a message of support and encouragement to individuals striving to reach their full potential as leaders.

Redefining Professional Development

While traditional job training programs are valuable, the conference aimed higher, recognizing the existence of a glass ceiling, particularly for underrepresented groups, when it comes to ascending professionally. By focusing on leadership and self-awareness skills, such as personal brand, communication styles, and giving feedback, the event aimed to shatter these barriers and pave the way for advancement.

Highlights and Impact

The conference delivered on its promise through dynamic keynotes from Nika White of Nika White Consulting and Derek Young of Derek Young Speaks, and workshops from talent development experts and renowned coaches like Pascale Bourne of the Bourne Transformation Group, Katherine Burnett of KHB Consulting, Marie Webb of EPB, Meredyth Ring from Guiding Light Leadership, Jacqueline Harp of REI Co-op, and Mika Moser of At C Level – all who offered practical insights on strategic decision-making, dug into the art of communication, how to approach personal branding and innovation in the workplace, and more. Attendees were empowered with tools for immediate application in their professional lives. Moreover, the event facilitated networking, mentorship, and collaboration, laying the foundation for ongoing personal and community impact.

A Movement Towards Inclusive Leadership

The Ascension Leadership Conference was not just an event; it ignited a movement towards inclusive leadership development. By ensuring accessible and clear pathways to leadership for all individuals, the conference laid the groundwork for a future where diversity and dynamism lead the way in shaping communities and organizations.
