The DEIB Collaborative was created to bring together diversity and inclusion practitioners to connect, learn, and collaborate together to form a more inclusive Chattanooga. The 2nd quarterly DEIB Collaborative was a success!

Our topic of discussion was Paradox Awareness: A Tool for Weighing DEI Metrics presented by Dr. Keith White, Vice President of Research and Effectiveness at the Public Education Foundation (PEF). Dr. White is a nationally recognized expert on diversity, inclusion and equity in education, having authored three books on the subject and published over 70 articles in peer-reviewed journals in addition to training thousands of educators around the country on how to increase student achievement through culturally responsive teaching practices.

Key takeaways of the event:

  1. Data can be used for good and also misused for bad.

  2. The most important DEI metric is psychological safety.

  3. It is wrong to suppose that if you can't measure it, you can't manage it—a costly myth.

Attendees came prepared with questions to ask Dr. White during the Q&A session, which allowed us to dive deeper into what it means to be inclusive and how we can use these metrics to measure our progress as an inclusive community. One thing we learned during this event is that it takes more than one person to make an impact. The DEI Collaborative will continue as a quarterly event so that participants can share best practices and continue building relationships with each other as we move forward into 2023 and beyond.
