Inclusive Communication: Introduction

Effective communication is crucial to any successful relationship, including professional ones. In today's diverse and rapidly changing world, intentional and inclusive communication is more important than ever before. When we take the time to consider our language, our tone, and our representation, we can create a more supportive and collaborative environment that values diversity and promotes belonging.

There is a growing body of research on the impact of inclusive communication in corporate correspondence. Inclusive communication refers to communication practices that are designed to be accessible and inclusive to people from diverse backgrounds, abilities, and identities. Some studies have found that inclusive communication can lead to better engagement and understanding among employees, customers, and stakeholders. To effectively communicate inclusively requires inclusive language. A report by Deloitte found that companies that prioritize diversity and inclusion in their communication practices are more likely to have better financial performance.

What can you do? It’s essential to be intentional about our language and tone. The words we choose can have a powerful impact on how our message is received by different audiences. Why does it matter? Applying this inclusive communication practice into our everyday relationships will help us become more effective and empathetic communicators. By accomplishing this, we can foster a supportive and collaborative environment that values diversity and promotes a sense of belonging.
